Yep, not going to warm and fuzzy about this topic!
You can seriously be hurt or fatally injured riding a bike in Bali. Sooooo many people jump on a bike without having any clue as to the risk of their actions. The freedom of jumping on a bike in bali and taking off on adventures around the island is just a down-right awesome experience! To hire a bike you simply pay, they're cheap and hirers don’t really give a stuff if you have a licence, and or any competence.
Riding a bike is the highest risk activity you can do on the island!
So many people are being injured on bikes through lack of confidence, no experience, not understanding the flow of traffic, not wearing helmets, ohh and the best one - getting wasted and thinking they are invincible on a bike!!! You Legend!!!
This is occurring daily by the 100s! Seriously, its disgusting behaviour, its totally stupidity, you're not only placing yourself but others at extreme risk - Think about the consequences!!!
Firstly, I really want to use bad language and link a video of my ranting about this topic, but I can’t do that. But, what I can do is try and inspire you to think. Right at that moment when apart of you says ahhh f$#$ it and you jump on a bike…
Please ask yourself this question:
“So what is it you care about so much in your life that if you were to lose it, it would devastate and change everything in your life?”
Research in 2016 was undertaken on “reported”, yes reported, bike incidents in Bali.
Bike accident statistics - The official number from the provincial Traffic Police estimates
Incidents from Motor Bikes:
1200 motor bike deaths per year in Bali
6000 motor bike riders severely injured per year in Bali
12000 motor bike riders with minor injuries in Bali, were good enough to seek medical assistance
With the number of visitors increasing in Bali by 30-50% in 2019 makes these numbers even more serious!
A recent canstar.com.au research into accidents found the top result, drinking alcohol (63 per cent), could be an issue as many policies carried an alcohol exclusion cause — which meant if alcohol was deemed to be a factor in the incident prompting a claim, it would generally be denied.

So our BaliSafe tip:
- Don’t ride unless you are competent and capable - get some lessons. Book with Musli, comes well recommended by many.
- Don’t ride unless you have local or international licence - You won’t be covered by insurance and there’s a possibility of being detained by the police.
- Wear a Helmet.
- Don’t ride after drinking - GOJEK is cheap!
